Dollar (or "Ringgit") Cost Averaging strategy

Once, the market keeps going down, another time an upward trend; then it goes down again.
In an uncertainty market like current situation, I definitely agree that the best option is to go for "Dollar Cost Averaging" in investments.

According to Wikipedia,
Dollar Cost Averaging is a timing stratagy of investing equal dollar amounts regularly and periodically over specific time periods (such as $100 monthly) in a particular investment or portfolio. The point of this is to lower the total average cost per share of the investment, giving the investor a lower overall cost for the shares purchased over time.

Let's talk about how it works in Unit Trusts (Mutual Fund) investments.

In Unit Trusts, the key is to LOWER the AVERAGE COST per unit of a fund.
That is also 1 of the secrets to investing successfully. Why? Because, nobody can TIME the market! Remember i wrote in my previous post, that "timing" and "choosing the right fund" is 2 most important element? Well, this dollar cost averaging strategy definitely can LOWER the risk of "timing" the market. Because we can never always predict accurately whether the market will rise or decline. I find this strategy very useful to be a successful investor.

This strategy is the opposite of "lump sum" investment. Let's say you want to put aside RM5,000 to invest. By using dollar cost averaging, you may invest RM500 per time (eg per month), investing for a total of 10 times to reach RM5,000; rather than investing a one lump sum of RM5,000. UNLESS you are 100% sure that the market is at its LOWEST point, then please invest as much as you can, you'll 100% earn unlimited profit! But the problem is, how can you be 100% sure as we are not God?

Let me give you a simple illustration. Let's say you work in a retail shop selling pens. Supplier A offers you RM0.40 per pen. You buy it - cos you do not know whether the price will increase or decrease in future. You handed RM40 to Supplier A, giving you a total of 100 pens. However, if Supplier B comes into the picture, offering you only RM0.20 per pen, of course you buy from Supplier B now. Thus, the same RM40 you handed over to Supplier B, B gives you a total of 200 pens! Now you have 300 pens altogether, costing you RM80; meaning, the cost per pen = RM80/300 = RM0.267.

Now you may think why don't you buy MORE from Supplier B. Yes sure you can. So you buy RM80 instead of only RM40 from B. Now B gives you 400 pens. So, plus the pens from Supplier A of 100 pens, now your total pens = 500 pens. Cost per 500 pens (costing RM40 from Supplier A and RM80 from Supplier B) is RM120/500 pens = RM0.24 per pen! Now this is the whole idea of Dollar Cost Averaging.

If you do not really get what I’m trying to explain, you may not have known the many benefits of investing in unit trusts; I strongly urge you to continue reading this [I’m not any better than you, just that I have the privilege of studying Finance in my Degree and I’m now a part time Unit Trust Consultant myself]

I can say that the key to Mutual Fund (unit trust) investment lies in the word “DIVERSIFICATION”. As economists like to quote: Don’t put all eggs in one basket. We do not want to lose all our eggs (ie. money) when we accidentally dropped that one basket (ie. the place we save/invest our money). To put it simply, diversification minimizes our risk of losing our hard-earned money. What does this fact of diversification got to do with investing in Unit Trust? Well, the maximum percentage of a Mutual Fund investing in any shares of one company is only 10%. A Fund may invest from 40% to 90% in equity (share market), depending on an investor’s tolerance of risk.

The only SECRET to making money in unit trusts is – BUY LOW, SELL HIGH. A very simple concept; Just like managing a retail shop, we need to buy at a lower price and sell at a higher price in order to make profit, right?

In unit trusts investment, what I’ve found out is, “TIMING” and “buying the RIGHT fund” (unit trust fund that is performing well) are the most important element. That’s why some people gain from investing, some don’t.

In an economic crisis like now (If you have noticed, is recovering swiftly now), if we have extra cash, we really need to grasp this golden opportunity TO INVEST as the market price is low. We don’t normally get this opportunity; maybe once in a lifetime, or once in 10 years. No one can guarantee whether the market would crash further down again or that would it continue to rise up and up. Nevertheless, the market price is still considerably low at the current stage, thus, the probability for the market price to rise and for us to earn money by investing is high. Do not delay, thinking that the market price will go down again, only then you invest.. Because, what if it doesn’t? Even professionals cannot predict. And even if the market price goes down again, it will surely recover, the sooner or later; This is an economic cycle.

“Buying the right fund” is important because not every unit trust fund performs well. I’m fortunate to have a very good up-line (my superior, a Unit Trust Agency Manager) who is very dedicated in monitoring the funds, who coaches me and fills me with her many years experience of monitoring of the fund prices. If you are really interested in investing in Public Mutual funds, Do let me know, and do not worry whom to look for to invest, how and where; Also, it’s my pleasure to advise you which funds are performing well/worthwhile to invest.

But i received it a day after my convocation nite, otherwise i would have taken photo with it in my graduation gown that same nite! and *proudly* showing it off to my friends around! haha~
And yup, the umbrella is also 1 of the gift... unique gift for a graduation? Such a sweet fren to have bought me that cos i've been wanting a new folded umbrella all this while...^^

The view from the Mountain

Notice 3 things:
(1) Not everybody gets to go up to the mountain. Jesus picked the 3 who went. He didn't take everybody so nobody would feel slighted. And He didn't explain or apologise to the other disciples who stayed at ground level. God loves us all equally but He doesn't give us all the same assignment or experiences with Him. God makes the call, not us, so trust Him. He knows what He's doing.

(2) Those who go up the mountain aren't necessarily wiser or more Spiritual. After seeing Jesus enveloped in the glow of God's glory, Peter blurted out, "Let's build three tabernacles and stay here" (Matthew 17:4). Peter was sincere, but he was sincerely wrong. Resist the temptation to speak by waiting to hear what God has to say, or to build your ministry around an experience you've had with God that's designed to equip you personally rather than become the theme and emphasis of your life.

(3) God's plan is to feature Jesus, not you. And it's a lesson we keep having to learn over and over. "While He was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him! ... When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus" (Matthew 17:5-8). The greatest challenge in your life is getting to the place where you focus on "no one except Jesus". The most important relationship you have is with Him. The only plan that will work out right is the one He gives you. And the power needed to fulfil that plan comes from Him alone.

At a Women of Faith conference they were short of space for 150 people, so the staff brought in narrower chairs. Everyone had a seat, but conditions in the auditorium were cramped and nobody was happy. The director asked the guest speaker, Joni Eareckson Tada, to help calm the crowd. A childhood diving accident had left Joni quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair. As the attendants pushed her out onto the platform she addressed the audience: "I understand some of you don't like the chair you're sitting in. Well, neither do I! But I've a thousand handicapped friends who'd gladly trade places with you." Immediately the hall went quiet and the complaining stopped.

When Paul was training Timothy he said, "Be strong in the grace that is in Christ" (2 Timothy 2:1), and gratitude is an offshoot of grace. The Bible says, "Let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God... giving thanks to His name." After the Bible expositor Matthew Henry was accosted and robbed he wrote in His diary: "Let me be thankful, 1st, that I was never robbed before, 2nd, that although they took my purse they didn't take my life, 3rd, that although they took everything I had, it wasn't much, 4th, that it was I who was robbed, and not I who did the robbing."

If you're struggling to find something to be grateful for today, here's a good reason: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever" (Psalm 118:29)

God's Plan

Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him, yet He didn't stop him. He could have summoned 12 legions of angels to help Him, yet He didn't call on them. Under the weight of our sins He cried from the cross, "My God, why have You forsaken Me?" That's because He understood it was all part of God's plan for Him. His words, "God, where are You?" teach us that: (a) You can be in God's plan yet at times feel overwhelmed and alone. (b) When God doesn't answer you must stand on the Word He has given you. (c) The pain of this season will eventually give way to the joy God has, waiting for you on the other side of it. So stick to the plan; that's what disciples do.

The word 'disciple' means to be disciplined. It means sticking to the plan when you're under attack. It teaches you how to function when you don't feel like it. The enemy will come against the plan of God in your life, because that plan is like a hedge of protection around you. As long as you stay in God's plan, nothing that the enemy does can destroy you.

So, when you feel like you've reached the end of your rope and you can't go another step, do what Jesus did - PRAY, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit" (Luke 23:46). Give it to God! Look up and say, "Lord, I'm trusting You to do what I cannot do. Bring me through this. Here it is; I'm turning it over to You. My life, my future, and my all are in Your hands!"

Are You Workacholic?

When you experience rejections early in life you feel like you constantly have to PROVE yourself, so you become a workaholic in order to gain people's acceptance. One woman writes, "I can still hear my father yelling, telling me I'd never be any good, never amount to anything. The more he yelled, the more determined I became to prove him wrong." Do you have voiced like that in your head? It's true that you'll succeed by working hard, but to experience lasting satisfaction you must know that you're fulfilling God's will for your life. When all is said and done, what matters most is knowing you're loved and accepted by God. What can top that?

God measures with a different yardstick. He won't ask what kind of car you drove, but how many people you gave rides to. He won't ask the square footage of your home, but how you raised your children and treated your family. He won't ask about the brand names in your closet, but who you helped to clothe. He won't ask about your salary, but how much you invested into the building of His Kingdom. He won't ask about your job title, but if you tried to perform with excellence and integrity. He won't ask how many friends you had, but how many people you were a friend to. He won't ask what neighbourhood you lived in, but if you loved your neighbour. He won't ask about your politics or the colour of your skin, but about the quality of your character.
So don't just work hard, work hard for the right reasons!

My 23rd birthday - full of sweet surprises

My 23rd birthday was the sweetest of all my birthdays, and sweetest of all Valentines day..
I know it's been quite late that I write this entry, but anyways, thanks to all my good friends Shan Shan, Tze Fair, Li Na, Jennifer, Alex, and of course, GT.
For the 6th year we've been together (me & GT), this year was the 1st year that we're celebrating Valentines .. initially GT told me that he wanted to celebrate my birthday cum valentines at Citrus (on 14 feb nite), so he brought me there.. he said he wanna celebrate it early so that i can celebrate my birthday with my frens on the 15th or 16th. OK, fair enough, but i wasn't sure my close frens will be available for my special day, but i did have faith in them. And know what? That was the 1st time i've been "tricked"(in a positive manner) by him, and being wholly surprised by him together with my beloved friends. I felt so pampered and ... loved. I will never forget this special birthday celebration that has occurred to me once in a lifetime. The feeling was so .. undescribably .. wonderful. It was very very sweet, indeed, implanted in my heart, leaving a touched feeling stamped upon it.
To cut the long story short, let the pictures do the talking ya ..


When i was waiting for my food to come, suddenly, the lights went dimmed. Honestly, I thought it was one of the Valentines nite "tradition", to dim the lights so that the atmosphere was more romantic. Haha, innocent me, only to find out that Tze Fair & Shan Shan emerged from nowhere (only after that i knew that they were hiding in the washroom .. Ah, feel sorry for u both..), with Tze Fair carrying my birthday cake!! You see the look on my face, I was 100% very, very, surprised, and touched, of course ^-^ I guess it was because my happiness overpowered my feeling of touched, that was why I did not cry, because I'm a girl who would easily cry when feel touched..


This was the most gorgeous birthday cake that I've got, throughout 23 years of my life! It was very tasty too - oreo cheese cake!! The bear bear on top is now sitting sweetly in my car (poor thing it has been "injured" a bit from the candles, but anyway it is still healthy, and yes, very sweet-looking).

Another birthday surprise from CVs! Honestly, when the cake was handed out, i really thought it was another friend's birthday.. cos 1) it has only 2 candles on the cake (ok ppl, thanks for thinking that i'm 3 years younger, i forgive u, i love to be young anywayz, haha.. How good it is to be young ..) 2) I didn't think I was THAT lucky/honorable to receive another surprise birthday on the same night, at different places, not to mention 1 after another.






I took quite a long time to recognize my name on the b'day cake.. cos i really couldn't believe it's MY cake.. haha...






The dolphin is not my present though.. just borrowed someone's Valentine's present.. cos Tze Fair could not resist its cuteness! oh, i admit it's cute too..


So, all in all, these are the presents I've received that night --- 14 Feb 2009. I love them.


Another present received from my good old fren Hui Jiun - all the way from KL! haha.. given to me by her mum ... wow thanks. She is really sweet! Feel sorry that I have not given her any present (hers was a week b4 mine.. Forgive me for just sending her a b'day greeting through sms).. ok ok, next year.. next year...

On a side note, although i was super happy on 14 Feb, I was sad on my actual birthday (16 Feb 2009). WHY? Because, a guy "fren" of mine gave me a present that I could not receive, but I received it at 1st, then i have to give it back to him, which he got so angry that it almost broke our friendship.. then, our friendship was never the same again .. it hurts.
Anyway, when I think that I still have my close frens like LiNa & Jennifer (& of course, GT) who would always be there for me, there is no reason for me to be sad .. And I should treasure my good true friends, from the bottom of my heart, always & forevermore...........................

I can't help but link this to "that someone" who fits exactly to this handphone dilemma here.. The good old boyfriend that I have now is so many times better than "that new someone". As well as the handphone dilemma, why would I want to change good for the "not so good"? APPRECIATION is key. I appreciate my boyfriend who is so good to me. I appreciate "that new someone" as my friend, IF he can be one. I appreciate my grand lucky draw prize, so I wish to sell it off for RM299-RM333 (negotiable) to get cash in exchange ;) Yup, appreciate means not dumping it there and not doing anything with it.. It means DOING something with it ...

To all who read this blog, please tell me if you or anyone is interested in buying Nokia 2680. It is for low end users. The original price is RM399 on website. It is worth the buy if you are looking for this model because it has no deviation from the original, only that the warranty starts at 12.02.2009.

My fashion concept is: "Simple yet elegant, with a tinge of youthfully cute yet matured enough".
Complicated? Well, I have quite a number of pictures to share with here.

This CNY i decided to mix match some outfits that I already had in my wardrobe, coming up with new combination that I never wore before. Some items are new, some are old; so it's like mix-matching old outfits with new outfits that comes out a new combination! Here are what it turned out to be:






I've bought a choker (RM15) & a handbag (RM25) at the CNY night market.

The bag looks fine to me, but the quality is not up to my standards since it's pretty squishy, but since it's RM25 & i'm looking for a bag right then ....

Back home, I tried taking pics of myself with my choker (my 1st choker ever):



Besides being a choker alone, it could be worn as a head band..


Trying to fool around with it.. making it a "forehead band"! oh yea?

I didn't buy this shirt because 1stly, it looks too bombastic on me; 2ndly, I cannot afford to grow any fatter with this shirt...(you can see why)



By the way, how do I look in mini shorts? I didn't buy this pair of shorts too.. but I think it looked kind of cute.. However, with my extra slim long legs, I looked quite scarily skinny in it, that's why I needed to pose my legs a little, to make them looked better in a different angle ;)
